Ex Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev’s Cause of Death Clarified

The last leader of the ex-Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991, Mikhail Gorbachev’s cause of death was revealed after he passed away on Tuesday (August 30, 2022) at the age of 91.

May the great leader rest in peace; our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones, family, friends, and fans, during the sad period.

The Central Clinical Hospital confirmed the heartbreaking news of Mikhail Gorbachev’s passing in a statement shared on Tuesday, reporting, “Mikhail Sergeevich Gorbachev died this evening after a severe and prolonged illness.”

Gorbachev, the last Soviet president, developed arms removal negotiations with the United States and partnerships with Western forces to remove the Iron Curtain that had split Europe since World War Two and bring about the reunification of Germany.

He will be buried in Moscow’s Novodevichy Cemetery alongside his wife Raisa, who took her last breath in 1999, told Tass news agency, mentioning the foundation that Mikhail set up once he quit office.

When pro-democracy demonstrations cleaned across the Soviet bloc nations of communist Eastern Europe in 1989, he abstained from using force – unlike former Kremlin leaders who had sent tanks to destroy insurgencies in Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968.

But the protests fuelled aspirations for autonomy in the 15 republics of the Soviet Union, which disintegrated over the following two years in a disorderly fashion. Gorbachev worked in vain to stop that destruction.

“The era of Gorbachev is the era of perestroika, the era of hope, the era of our entry into a missile-free world … but there was one miscalculation: we did not know our country well,” said Vladimir Shevchenko, who headed Gorbachev’s protocol office when he was Soviet leader.

“Our union fell apart, that was a tragedy and his tragedy,” the RIA news agency quoted him as stating.

On evolving general secretary of the Soviet Communist Party in 1985, at the age of only 54, he had set out to restore the system by presenting limited political and economic freedoms, while his reforms turned out of control.

His guideline of “glasnost” – free speech – let previously outlandish criticism of the party and the state, though additionally encouraged nationalists who started to press for freedom in the Baltic republics of Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and elsewhere.

Many Russians never forgave the leader for the turbulence that his reforms caused, considering the following plunge in their living standards too high a cost to pay for democracy.

Following visiting Gorbachev in hospital on June 30, liberal economist Ruslan Grinberg said to the armed forces news, “He gave us all freedom – but we don’t know what to do with it.”
