Mikis Theodorakis’ death at his home in central Athens was confirmed on state television, and the Greek foreign minister also confirmed his death by sending condolences to the family on Twitter.

His prolific career was started at the age of 17 and produced a huge variety of works that varied from somber symphonies to film scores for “Serpico” and “Zorba the Greek” and popular television works.
He also is remembered by the Greeks for his stubborn opposition to postwar regimes that persecuted him and outlawed his music. Mikis wrote music that became intertwined with the history and social developments in Greece in the postwar years. His music provided “encouragement, consolation, protest, and support in the darker periods of our recent history.”

Mikis Theodorakis’ cause of death is not revealed officially, but he had multiple hospitalizations for heart treatment in recent years. He passed away at the age of 96.
Mikis was exposed to music and politics from a young age and started writing music and poetry in his teens, as Greece entered World WarII. He was arrested during the war by the country’s Italian and German occupiers for his involvement in left-wing revolution groups.

Some of those groups opposed the government and monarchy, leading to a 1946-1949 civil war in which the Communist-backed rebels eventually lost.
The legend was sentenced and sent to remote Greek islands and the infamous “re-education” camp on an island near Athens. As a result of severe beatings and pain, Mikis suffered broken limbs, respiratory problems, and other injuries that risked his health for the rest of his life.
