Sound mixer’s aunt Cathy Snyder posted a message on Facebook from her brother David, Michael’s father, confirming his son’s suicide. In the post, Snyder wrote that Michael took his own life last week.

Michael Wolf Snyder’s dead body was found in his Queens, N.Y. home when the father went to check on him Monday after he had dropped out of contact for several days.

The late artist started his career in 2011 with Henry Miller’s Occupant, working in several of sound roles from boom operator to location sound director to sound mixer.

The statement from the father, posted by Cathy Snyder, also explained about the cause of Michael Wolf Snyder’s suicide “Michael took his own life sometime in the last week, and it wasn’t discovered until I went to check on him Monday after he dropped out of contact for several days.”

David Snyder a psychiatrist, originally posted a message on Facebook on March 4. “He has suffered from Major Depression for many years. For most people, this is an illness that waxes and wanes over the years. I’m sure it was difficult for Michael that he spent most of the last year alone in his small, Queens apartment, being responsible about dealing with the coronavirus.”

He detailed his son’s tragic passing in “The hope that it could help others,” continued that his son seemed “especially joyful and invigorated” upon returning to work on a number of film projects.

Unfortunately, Michael passed on before the Golden Globe Awards on Feb. 28, David Snyder added.

Another tweeted: “Dude was my age. Suffered from depression. Worked on what I feel is the most depressing film of the year, that will probably also win Best Picture.”

A statement on behalf of the cast and crew of ‘Nomadland’ read: ‘As our hearts break with the loss of Wolf, we hope it is heartwarming to know that his spirit will live on for. still in every laugh he recorded, every breeze, and every gallop of a horse. He was part of our little film family and his caring soul touched us all. Wolf really brought our film to life. We extend our condolences to his family on behalf of the entire “Nomadland” business. See you soon, my dear friend.”

Searchlight Pictures shared a condolences, “We extend our deepest condolences to Wolf’s family and our friends, the ‘Nomadland’ company.”

A Short Biography of Michael Wolf Snyder

Michael wrote, produced, and mixed Jodie’s Way in 2014. It was a short film about a trans high schooler who has a run-in with the local mean girls. Three years later he entered the team of Chloé Zhao’s The Rider as a boom operator as well as sound mixer.

The film is one part of Zhao’s trilogy about being dispossessed and left behind in the modern American West. In the same year (2017) Michael Wolf Snyder additionally collaborated on the sci-fi drama “Imitation Girl” and the next year (2018) Melora Walters thriller “The Amaranth.”

In 2020 Snyder came back to with for her Francis McDormand-starrer, Nomadland. He helped fill the narrative about modern-day nomads with the atmospheric showing of America’s natural landscapes.

For his artwork on Nomadland, Snyder was nominated multiple times for best sound at both the Satellite Awards and the CinEuphoria Awards.

Good to know, the late sound mixer won the best sound award for his work on ‘Rockaway’ at the First Run Festival in 2012,.
