The heartbreaking news was revealed on his Instagram account, sharing: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Patrick Demarchelier.”
“He is survived by his wife Mia, his three sons Gustaf, Arthur, Victor, and three grandchildren,” the message on his Instagram account read.
Demarchelier’s photographs have appeared on the covers of Vanity Fair, Vogue, Allure, Harper’s Bazaar, and for several campaigns for fashion houses including Chanel, Dior, and Louis Vuitton.
The talented photographer was mostly known to capture some of Princess Diana’s signature photographs, later becoming her personal photographer.
He shot covers for Newsweek, Elle, Rolling Stone, Glamour, Life, and Mademoiselle. Demarchelier photographed many advertising campaigns, including the Brooke Shields doll in 1982, Farrah Fawcett shampoo in 1978, Cutty Sark, Lauren by Ralph Lauren, and a Calvin Klein ad with Talisa Soto.
Patrick also worked with Gianni Versace, Giorgio Armani, Chanel, GAP, L’Oréal, Revlon, Elizabeth Arden, Lancôme, and Gianfranco Ferré.

Patrick Demarchelier’s Cause of Death is Still Secret
Details of Patrick Demarchelier’s cause of death have not been shared by his family at this time. The legendary photographer sadly passed away on March 31, 2022, at the age of 78.
Demarchelier was the primary photographer for On Your Own, a beauty/lifestyle guide book written for young women by Brooke Shields.
From 1992 on the photographer worked with Harper’s Bazaar, and became its premier photographer. He was awarded the contract for the 2005 Pirelli Calendar.
Patrick helped the careers of many make-up artists like Pat McGrath, Laura Mercier, and Jason Marks, over the years. In March 2013, the late photographer was listed as one of the fifty best-dressed over the 50s by The Guardian.
He appeared in a cameo in the film version of Sex and the City. Demarchelier was featured prominently in several episodes of Cycle 15 of America’s Next Top Model.
Christine Albanel, French Minister of Culture, honoured Patrick as an Officer in l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2007.
In February 2018, he was accused by seven models of sexual harassment. In response to the allegations, Condé Nast shared “we have informed Patrick we will not be working with him for the foreseeable future.”
Many celebrities mourned the photographer’s passing on social media. Model Emily Ratajkowski wrote on Instagram: “So honored to have worked with the legend and the most lovely @patrickdemarchelier you will be missed.”
“Always loved working with Patrick so much. Very sad to hear of his passing. I am sending so much love to his family,” actress Kate Hudson commented on Patrick’s Instagram.
Giorgio Armani wrote in a tribute on Twitter: “Fashion photography and the art of portraiture, has lost one of its great masters.”
Ciara wrote on Twitter: “I’ll never forget the special moment of being shot by the legendary photographer Patrick Demarchelier. It was a dream come true. He was so sweet. He was also one of my favorite photographers. His work will live on to inspire so many.”
