Cancer Turned to be Businessman Peter Nicholas’ Cause of Death

With a heavy heart, we have to announce that unfortunately, co-founded medical device firm Boston Scientific passed away on May 14, 2022. Peter Nicholas’ cause of unexpected death is reported as a deadly disease.

Born to Greek-American parents, Mr. Nicolas met scientist Abele at a kids’ soccer game in 1979. By borrowing $800,000, they started Boston Scientific, a manufacturer of medical devices.

He had a hand in growing the company through a series of astute acquisitions. Along with partner John Abele, Peter M. Nicholas is known to be the co-founding of the medical device firm Boston Scientific.

In 1964, Mr. Nicholas achieved a B.A. from Duke University and an M.B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. Nicholas is Chairman Emeritus of the Duke Board of Trustees.

Putting those aside, He was ranked #78 by Forbes magazine‘s list of “The 400 Richest Americans”, with an estimated worth of $4 billion in 2005.

The Nicholas family gave $20 million to Duke University for the School of the Environment in 1996, which subsequently renamed the school in his honor. Almost four years later, Peter received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.

Mr. Nicholas remained closely involved in Boston Scientific’s day-to-day operations even after stepping down from his two-decade post as CEO in 1999. They were included as chairman of the board.

He finally stepped back from the company around 2016. it was at that point that he decided to get retired from his post as chairman a year earlier than expected.

In the 2020 Wharton interview, the hard-working man was awarded the school’s lifetime achievement award where he discussed his approach to leading a company.

H shared his experience by saying that successful leaders are less comfortable talking about their own accomplishments. He said: “I have always placed more value on the leaders who lead from the front and are the doers, enthralled not by self, but by the outcomes that they and their teams achieve.”

What Stands Behind Peter Nicholas’ Cause of Death?

Peter Nicholas’ cause of death, according to several sources, was due to cancer. His passing came shortly before what would have been his 81st birthday on Monday, May 16. He passed away in his home in Boca Grande, Florida.

Nicholas and his wife Ginny made another large pledge to Duke in 2004, totaling $72 million. The amount of $70 million of that donation was sent to the Nicholas School of the Environment, and $2 million was well-spent on Perkins library.

“As a pioneer who helped shape the field of minimally invasive surgery, Pete Nicholas is remembered worldwide for his contribution to vastly improved patient outcomes and equally impressive increases in healthcare efficiency. Within the Boston Scientific family, Pete was also a lifelong mentor, motivator, and friend to hundreds of employees.”

This man divided his time between Natick, a suburb of Boston, and Woods Hole, a village on Cape Cod, and Boca Grande, on the Gulf Coast of Florida.

Noted, Mr. Nicholas worked with Eli Lilly and Company before co-founding Boston Scientific. He currently serves on the Board of Advisors of the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions.


Reactions to Peter Nicholas’ Death

Bloomberg wrote: “Peter Nicholas, co-founder of the medical device maker Boston Scientific and its longtime leader as it grew into a global giant with tens of thousands of employees, has died. He was 80.”

A fan commented: “So incredibly sad to hear the news that Peter Nicholas passed away. Pete was an early supporter of Forerunner and a constant source of enthusiasm for our team. To be able to work with such an iconic founder was inspiring and we will miss him dearly.”

Forever Duke shared: “We recognize and honor the incredible contributions and legacy of Peter M. Nicholas ’64, whose vision and gift established the Nicholas School of the Environment at @DukeU (@DukeEnvironment).”

One replied: “Peter Nicholas co-founded the Marlborough medical device maker $BSX and headed it up for two decades before stepping down in 1999. He continued to chair the board until 2016 when he yielded the role to CEO Mike Mahoney.”
