Beloved ‘Father Abraham’, Pierre Kartner Passed Away at 87

With a heavy heart, we have to inform you that on November 8, 2022, a Dutch musician, singer-songwriter and record produce left this world. Pierre Kartner passed away at the age of 87 who became famous as Father Abraham. May he rest in peace.
Kartner was born in Elst in 1935 and lived most of his life in Breda. His life was utterly dominated by music. So, he was a singer, (formerly) bassist, lyric, music writer, and producer during his career.
He rose to fame after releasing “Het Kleine Café Aan de Haven” (1975) and “Het smurfenlied” (1977), and both of them became hit songs and people around the world were constantly listening to them.


His first hit “Het Kleine Café” was covered over 200 times by other artists, and with “Het Smurfenlied” he was at the top of all charts worldwide. In addition, during his career, he gained fame with a large number of carnival songs.
Corry Konings (with and without De Rekels), Jacques Herb, Ben Cramer, and Mieke were celebrities who had success with Kartner productions. In addition to previous artists, foreign artists such as Nana Mouskouri, Joe Dassin, and Peter Alexander also had Kartner songs in their repertoire.
The Breda musician remained active until old age, was convinced that he could create a globally acclaimed evergreen such as ‘Het Kleine Café’ one more time. It shouldn’t have come that far, but he nevertheless leaves behind an impressive oeuvre.
Also, the world can consider him among the most important guardians of the light, Dutch-language song in the 20th and 21st centuries. Despite that he received many awards during his fruitful career, including:
- Edison
- Buma Lifetime Achievement Award
- Golden Harp
- Royal decoration in 2000
Although as far as we know, Pierre Kartner was constantly expressing his disappointment at the lack of appreciation in his own country for his work, especially from “Hilversum”.
Pierre Kartner was married to Annie. The couple has one son, Walter. It has been reported that Pierre Kartner was buried in silence on Friday morning. May he rest in peace.

It was about two years that Kartner was living in full retreat and as a result of fans didn’t have the privilege to watch his performances and he didn’t even appear in the public eye. There was no announcement about how Pierre Kartner passed away.
