Born on June 29, 1935, the beloved British politician who was awarded an OBE in the 1993 New Year Honours, was raised to the peerage in 2000 as Baroness Greengross, of Notting Hill in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea sitting as a crossbencher.
She attended Brighton and Hove High School, a girls’ independent school in Brighton and Hove. She later went to continue her education at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
From 1987 until 2000, Greengross served as Director-General of Age Concern England. She was joint Chair of the Age Concern Institute of Gerontology at King’s College London, and Secretary-General of Eurolink Age until 2000.


Greengross held honorary doctorates from a number of British universities, including:
- an Honorary Doctor of Letters (DLitt) degree by the University of Ulster in 1994
- Brunel University in 2002
- The University of Keele in 2004
- a Doctor of the University (DUniv) degree by the Kingston University in 1996
- the Open University, and Leeds Metropolitan University in 2002
- an Honorary Doctor of Laws (LLD) by the University of Exeter in 2000

From 2000, Greengross was considered to be an independent crossbench member of the House of Lords and Co-Chairs of five All-Party Parliamentary Groups:
- Dementia,
- Corporate Social Responsibility,
- Bladder,
- Bowel Continence Care,
- Social Care and Ageing and Older People.
Besides being the Treasurer of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Equalities, Sally was the Vice-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Groups on Choice at the End of Life and Longevity.
Having so much on her plate and working hard, she was also Chair of the cross-party Intergenerational Fairness Forum. It was announced in December 2006, that Sally would be a Commissioner for the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
Baroness Greengross made the following statement in the House of Lords on 23 April 2012, whilst Chair of the Association of Retirement Housing Managers.
