Sheldon Menery’s Death after 7 Years of Cancer Battle

MTG Commander’s creator Sheldon Menery’s cause of death was released by his wife through a Facebook post on September 7, 2023. May he rest in peace.
Menery is known as one of the co-founders of the Commander Rules Committee, in which he served as its representative.
As lead of the Rules Committee, Menery played a large role in the bans, rules announcements, and guiding the overall health of Commander.
The announcement of Sheldon Menery’s death was posted on Facebook by his wife, Gretchen Melde. In the message, she wrote: “Sheldon’s body could no longer fight. He passed away peacefully last night [September 7, 2023].”
She continued: “I know Sheldon touched many lifes, and I can’t put into words how much he will be missed.”
Over the past year, Menery has been in and out of hospital underground treatment for his cancer, including a week-long stay in June following a bout of pneumonia.
He has been involved in Magic: The Gathering for decades, serving as one of the highest-level judges for the game during his tenure.
Sheldon has been involved with Magic’s Commander format, helping shape it. He has been a part of Magic for years.
He worked directly on the game for the first time in 2021, working as part of the R&D team for Commander 2021 decks released alongside Strixhaven: School of Mages.

Cancer was announced as Sheldon Menery’s cause of death. He passed away peacefully after seven years of treatment for throat cancer last night September 7, 2023.
Menery wrote for TCG site Star City Games for several years, focusing on the health of the Commander format.
Menery made appearances in other creators’ work, such as on Tolarian Community College‘s Shuffle Up And Play, or on the podcast of Advisory Group member Shivam Bhatt.
He was active within the Commander Rules Committee’s own community, constantly being active in its Discord server and taking part in its livestreams.
