What Led to Grim Reaper Steve Grimmett’s Death at 62?
Singer for long-running British heavy metal band Grim Reaper Steve Grimmett’s cause of death has not been made public at the time of writing, but his death has been confirmed by his son.
The news was shared on Monday (Aug. 15) in a Facebook post from his son, Russ, who wrote, “We can’t begin to put into words the current feelings. But as dad was so well known the news is starting to reach out earlier than we would have liked.”
He continued: Unfortunately, our dad passed away today and leaves a massive hole in the world and our hearts. We are utterly heartbroken sleep tight dad. We always love you xxx.”
The younger Grimmett, who is a lead singer in the group Life of a Hero and the U.K. Bon Jovi tribute band Non-Jovi, included a series of pictures of his late dad in action as part of his tribute.
The singer’s wife, Millie, also paid touching tribute, writing, “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to write but it’s with a heavy & shattered heart to say that my beloved Steve died suddenly & unexpectedly on Monday 15th August. Wait for me, my love. Until we are together again. Your Millie xxx.”
Grimmett began his professional career in the era of the new wave of British heavy metal. Steve’s original band was the short-lived Medusa before he became well-known as the lead vocalist for Grim Reaper.
He later featured in Onslaught for a short period, before creating Lionsheart and in more recent times, The Steve Grimmett Band and GrimmStine.
Grim Reaper achieved success worldwide with three highly acclaimed studio albums and also with single releases and MTV airplay. After the band came a brief spell with Onslaught, with a debut single that charted in the UK.
The Steve Grimmett Band is a more recent project, with Steve backed by Chaz Grimaldi, Ian Nash, and Pete Newdeck. The band has continued to gig as Steve’s Grim Reaper with a lineup now featuring Mark Rumble on drums.

What’s behind Steve Grimmett’s Cause of Death?
Grim Reaper frontman Steve Grimmett’s cause of death has not been announced. His son said that his father sadly passed away at the age of 62 on August 15, 2022.
Grimmett had just come back from the United States promoting his international band GrimmStine which included Steve Stine on guitar, Grimmett on vocals, Hat on bass, and Dave Johnson on drums. The band’s self-titled debut album was released in 2008.
Steve recorded a music video in conjunction with a commercial for Garmin and it aired during the 2007 Super Bowl XLI.
He was hospitalized in Ecuador in January 2017, due to an aggressive infection on his leg below the knee, where it was amputated in the process. Grimmett remained stationed in the medical facility til being released in February.
Grimmett began to walk again with a prosthetic metal leg attached in April. On 14 July, he performed on stage for the 1st time since the operation in a wheelchair at Bang Your Head!!!.
Since 2006, Steve Grimmett’s Grim Reaper has made several successful appearances at festivals around Europe, including Muskelrock, Keep It True, British Steel, and Sword brothers.
This lineup of the group also recorded his solo album Personal Crisis in 2007. To coincide with their run of gigs in Cyprus and Greece, the group issued the ltd edition live EP Live in Europe featuring classic Reaper tracks in November 2011.
Following the news of Steve Grimmett’s death, her friends and fans took to Twitter to express their deepest condolences.
Someone tweeted: “I’m so saddened since I learnt that Steve Grimmett passed away. A real hero with a magnificent voice. I feel honored that I saw him live and had a brief chat with him when he played with his band in Athens back in 2009. R.I.P.”
Troyen shared: “We’ve just heard the devastating news that Grim Reaper frontman the Legend that is Steve Grimmett has sadly passed away. Rest In Peace sir, you will be missed. Our thoughts are with his wife Millie, family, and band members at this sad time.”
