Spanish Opera Singer Teresa Berganza Sadly Passed Away

With the most profound sorrow, we are sad to inform you that the heart of the opera world is broken. The internationally famous Spanish mezzo-soprano, Teresa Berganza passed away on May 13, 2022, at 89.

On March 16, 1933, Teresa Berganza was born in Madrid, Spain. First, she studied:

  • piano
  • harmony
  • chamber music
  • composition
  • organ
  • cello

So before starting to sing she had a lot of information about these musical instruments and how to play them. She studied music at Madrid Royal Conservatory and in 1954, won her first singing prize, Also awarded a scholarship by the Ministry of Education to improve in Austria.

Teresa held her first concert a year after that, in 1955. She was married to a pianist and composer named Felix Lavilla.

She started her career as an Opera singer in 1957 in Mozart’s Così fan Tutte and became one of the most important and famous interpreters of Mozart and Rossini in the whole world.

Teresa was a mezzo-soprano which is a type of classical female singing voice whose vocal range lies between the soprano and the contralto voice types.

Berganza took her voice to the Scala in Milan, the Vienna Opera, Covent Garden in London, and the Metropolitan in New York.

Despite all of her music experiences, Berganza appeared in nine motion pictures, in the 70s she was in Il Barbiere di Siviglia and as Zerlina in Joseph Losey’s Don Giovanni movies, and both Massenet’s Werther and Carmen in 1980.

Fans Mourn when Teresa Berganza Passed Away

There is no specific reason for her passing and her family just confirmed her passing a few hours ago.

Operafashion tweeted that she dedicated her life to singing. Rest in peace.

Also, a fan shared her sadness and said:
”A great loss! The best Carmen, a wonderful colleague and a good friend to Placido Domingo. She leaves a gap and will be missed. Have a pleasant journey into another world, another sphere, dear Teresa Berganza”.
