Fr. Thomas McKenzie Quotes: The Anglican Way

He had written: “Love is the most easily dismissed of God’s commandments and characteristics. Christians sometimes seem to say, “Of course we should love people; we all know that. So now let’s get on with what we really want to do—fight about theology!” But love is the central Christian ethic; it’s the heartbeat of the church.”

He wrote: “It’s central to us because it’s essential to God. “God is love,” says the Bible. At the core of the Trinity is a love relationship between three Persons. God cannot be separated from love. Love is his nature. Unless the church is actively living out the reality of love, there is little reason to debate theology. And unless the church has a healthy theology, we won’t recognize true love when we see it.”

“If you are trying to light a fire before you succeed, you get smothered in smoke.”

He once said: “Unless the church is actively living out the reality of love, there is little reason to debate theology. And unless the church has a healthy theology, we won’t recognize true love when we see it.”

It is written in the Anglican way: “God cannot be separated from love. Love is his nature. Unless the church is actively living out the reality of love, there is little reason to debate theology. And unless the church has a healthy theology, we won’t recognize true love when we see it.”

“If you are trying to light a fire before you succeed, you get smothered in smoke, which irritates and brings tears to the eyes. Just so, it is written that our God is a consuming fire, and it is fitting that the divine fire should be lit in ourselves with tears and hard work,” he wrote in the Lent with the Desert Fathers.

Reactions to Fr. Thomas McKenzie’s Death

One expressed: “I loved @thomasmckenzie and was so impressed and humbled by Charlie’s talent and vulnerability (esp. in their music). Thomas was my friend and priest, and @RedeemerNash is grieving hard right now—as those with hope because Thomas taught us how to think about death. Risen indeed.”

Another one wrote: “I was only privileged to meet and hang out with Thomas McKenzie once in person at Provincial Assembly, but, gah, this is a punch to the gut. He knew how to get into “good trouble,” and introduced me and so many others to Anglicanism.”

One kindly said: “Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace and rise in glory. Amen.”

May he rest in Christ’s love

Trillia Newbell shared: “Dear God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, draw near to my friends tonight. Hear the cries of those who mourn and pour out your mercy.”

One tweeted: “Give rest, O Christ, to your servants with your saints, where sorrow and pain are no more, neither sighing, but life everlasting. Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord, and may their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God rest in peace.”

I remember meeting father for the first time up close at communion as a very young child. I stuck my tongue out after the wine. He smiled. A family friend and I who grew up in the youth group spoke of father thomas last night and she said that he was what kept her going to church growing up. Thank you for always being available and welcoming everyone no matter who into your church with open arms. I will really miss that. Praying for the mackenzie family.
