Danish Ex-Foreign Minister Uffe Ellemann-Jensen Passed Away
The most heartbreaking news was received on June 19, 2022, about the passing of one of the great figures of Danish politics. Uffe Ellemann-Jensen passed away the night of Sunday, at the age of 80, after a long illness with cancer.
He was born on November 1, 1941, in Haarby, Denmark. From 1998, Ellemann-Jensen was Chairman of the Baltic Development Forum. Also, he was a non-executive director of different boards of international companies.
He rarely pursued the foreign policy he wanted, and he never started the bourgeois reshaping of Danish society he settled on as left chairman, just as he never became prime minister during his career.
Ellemann-Jensen was the leader of the opposition till 1998. In 1998, Anders Fogh Rasmussen (Former Liberal Party chairman and Prime Minister of Denmark in 2001) took over the chairmanship of the Liberal Party from Uffe Ellemann-Jensen.
He lost with a single seat. If his party had only 85 more votes, he would have been able to form a new center-right government as Prime Minister. After his loss, he decided to leave politics and that was when Anders Fogh Rasmussen became Prime Minister instead of him.
Ellemann-Jensen and Rasmussen were ministerial colleagues throughout the years in the Poul Schlüter government. Rasmussen remembered him as a strong Danish political leader, a giant in the Liberal Party and he believed that a whole generation of young people became Liberals because of Uffe.
In August 2021, the then–fully vaccinated Ellemann-Jensen was admitted to the hospital with COVID-19 for three weeks; he was then in further treatment for two weeks. He had other health difficulties during his life:
Surgery for two spinal disc herniations in the neck and had a stent inserted in his heart. Also, because of his smoking, in 2003, he had another blood clot in an IC3 train to Aalborg.
Baltic Development Forum is a non-profit networking organization that is dedicated to the business development of the Baltic Sea region. Ellemann-Jensen is survived by his wife, Alice Vestergaard, their four children, and 10 grandchildren.

Now the battle for his legacy gets underway. He can no longer pull away and add on his own, but you can make sure he’s fine with it being a fight. For Uffe Ellemann-Jensen was contentious by nature. He didn’t want it any other way.
Søren Pind is the former Liberal minister and send his condolence and said: ”He was the personification of the Liberal Party I joined. He was a chief, and he formulated the chieftaincy that a little more was expected of the Liberals because that’s how it had to be.”
He added that:
”It is a great loss for the Danish people’s government, the Liberal Party, and also for me. It was Uffe Ellemann-Jensen’s fault that I became a Liberal Party man. We should make more of an effort. He was a leading figure, a leader, a real Liberal chief. He was on until the end and he burned as brightly as he always has.”Søren Pind
Also, his other colleagues remembered him as a loyal, great personality, very reliable, a man of great format and courage, warm and committed to the end. Mogens Lykketoft said: ”He has been a very unique personality in Danish politics.
Also, because he was allowed to be foreign minister longer than anyone else we can remember, he left his mark on the image that was of Denmark in the outside world, which was uniquely strong, says Mogens Lykketoft.” May he rest in peace.
