Share
With great sadness, we are to announce that the mother of Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, Virginia Hanlon Grohl passed away on August 17, 2022, at the age of 84. May she rest in peace.
We send our thoughts and prayers to her loved ones.
Virginia Hanlon Grohl was a real legend; she came to fame with her famous son, Nirvana/Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl who she kindly called ‘David’.

A user shared a statement, reading, “Sad news about the passing of Virginia Grohl. Rest In Peace. foofighterslive The team at FooFightersLive.com sends deepest condolences to the family and friends of Virginia Hanlon Grohl. Author of the book From Cradle to Stage and producer of the TV series of the same name, Virginia invited us into the world of music’s unsung heroes: The mothers raising rockstars. The fan community has always regarded Virginia with great respect and admiration. We ask as fellow fans that you continue to give respectful space to Dave and his family at this time.”
However, as a writer, musician, and just person in her own rite, she’s engaging to listen to. This piece comes out of Liz’s archive from 2018, with a previous generation of mic and baby #1 rather than #2 in the way. Sorry about that – although, who else is going to understand the juggle, hey?
The chat came as part of the promotions for Virginia’s appearance at Big Sound 2018 to publicize her book From The Cradle to the Stage: stories from the mothers who rocked and raised rock stars (Hatchette Books).
Part of the interview was released at the time via The Music, but this is the first time the whole thing has been released, including important details about how she juggled raising a child who would enter the music industry – and how she’s kept on now as a Music Mother and (Grand)Mother with Dave’s amazing daughters too.

She was 84 years old! Where did you get her age from.
No she is/wasn’t 68 or 84 if she was born in 1949! Easy math for those who know how to subtract!
Obviously a glut of accountants on this page…
Rest in sweet peace, Virginia. Keeping the Grohl Family in my heart and prayers.❤️🙏🏻🎼
Deepest condolences to David and his family for the loss of his beautiful Mum. We all know how much he adored his Mum. It was only on Friday I ordered Virginia’s book🥴 RIP 💗
She was 73 not 84. You couldn’t even get that right?
Much love to the Grohl family. I am a long time Foo Fighters fan and have read Cradle to the Stage and David’s bio Storyteller. Both great books. I cannot believe the sadness that David Ghrohl has been thru. I list my husband of 38 years. He was the love of my life. To get through this I frequently listen to the Foo Fighters song. I watch all their internet and videos. David has said music heals. I will never completely heal but his music helps. May we we blessed with more music from the Foo Fighters. Love to everyone.
