Hilaria Baldwin’s Apology of Fake Spanish Accent Became Polemic
Hilaria Baldwin’s apology for her fake Spanish accent became controversial. The lifestyle influencer, yoga instructor, and podcast co-host explained the situation in an Instagram post on Friday, Feb. 5.
The 36-year-old yoga instructor and Alec Baldwin‘s spouse took a moment to apologize for not being more explicit about her heritage after being accused of exaggerating her connection to Spain.
It was discovered she wasn’t born in Spain, as she had implied, and instead was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. Baldwin was also criticized for faking a Spanish accent.
She said she had spent time listening, reflecting, and asking herself how she could learn and grow, during the last month.
“My parents raised my brother and me with two cultures, American and Spanish, and I feel a true sense of belonging to both,” Hilaria wrote on her Instagram.
“The way I have spoken about myself and my deep connection to two cultures could have been better explained, I should have been more clear and I’m sorry.”
Hilaria added that she is proud of how she was raised, and now she and her husband Alec Baldwin are raising their kids to share the same love and respect for both.
Hilaria Baldwin’s Apology for Controversy
Hilaria’s heritage came into question in December 2020. A Twitter user addressed her “decade long grift where she impersonates a Spanish person.”
An Instagram user took it from there and shared posts creating a question about Hilaria’s cultural background, as well as her accent.
She emphasized that she did not intentionally create a false narrative about her origins, saying at one point: “I think there is a difference between hiding and creating a boundary.”
The professional podcaster and author wrote that being vulnerable and trying to learn and grow is what we have built our community on, and she wished to get back to the supportive and kind environment.
Also, she shared a photo of herself alongside her husband and their five little children; Carmen, Rafael, Leonardo, Romeo, and Eduardo.
Hilaria spoke out in an Instagram post, shortly before the new year that she had tried to be clear, but sometimes people “don’t report and write what you say.”
Added that she was born in Boston, spent some of her childhood in Boston and Spain alongside a lot of back and forth her entire life.
Alec Baldwin’s wife emphasized that although she was not born in Spain, her family lives there now. Her brother Jeremy, and her parents, David L. Thomas Jr., and Dr. Kathryn Hayward, lives in Mallorca, a Spanish island in the Mediterranean, moved in 2011.
Hilaria Baldwin also revealed that her real name is Hillary Hayward-Thomas. During an interview at the time, Baldwin tried to correct some of what she said: “are misconceptions about how she has presented herself.”
