What’ Cause of ‘Aliens’ Actor Jay Benedict’ Death?

“Aliens” and “The Dark Knight Rises,” star who also played Doug Hamilton in the ITV soap, Jay Benedict’s death occurred at the age of 68, on Saturday (April 4) according to a statement posted on His official website that published the tragic news.

The actor, who also appeared in Batman film The Dark Knight Rises alongside Christian Bale and Tom Hardy, was born in Burbank, California, but moved to Europe in the 1960s and spent most of his working life in the UK.

In the statement, his management team reported: “It is with profound sorrow that we must announce Jay’s death on the 4th of April due to complications arising from a COVID-19 infection.”

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear client Jay Benedict, who this afternoon lost his battle with COVID-19. Our thoughts are with his family,” they added in a statement.

As his website published, recent projects have included Downton Abbey, Dickensian, Call the Midwife, and Beowulf: Return to the Shieldlands. 

His “Emmerdale” co-star, Vicki Michelle, took to Twitter to honor after news of Jay Benedict’ Death.

“Shocked to hear one of our most brilliant actors and kind lovely man Jay Benedict has passed. Married to my lovely friend Phoebe Scholfield #AlloAllo My heart goes out to her and her family at this sad time,” she posted.

Benedict memorable roles

Benedict played Newt’s father in Alien sequel Aliens alongside Sigourney Weaver in 1986, and starred in Emmerdale in 1997, playing businessman Doug Hamilton.

Throughout a career in entertainment spanning more than 40 years, he also appeared in UK TV favorites including The Bill, Jonathan Creek, Casualty and Foyle’s War. On stage, he starred in The Trial Of Jane Fonda, and Two-Way Mirror, alongside Abi Titmuss.

Recently, he appeared in the French comedy-drama movie Madame with Toni Collette and Harvey Keitel.

He additionally worked extensively on British TV, appearing in shows like Jonathan Creek, The Bill, Lillyhammer with Sopranos star Steven Van Zandt, Casualty and Foyles War, as well as acting businessman Doug Hamilton in Emmerdale.

Among his first movie appearances was in the role of Deak, a friend of Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: A New Hope, though the scenes did not feature in the final movie. In 1986, he played the father of Newt in James Cameron’s Aliens, and also had roles in movies including The Dark Knight Rises and The Dirty Dozen: Next Mission.

In addition to his work on the screen, Benedict had a long and career in theater, with his website noting that he played “almost every male role in ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ in the early 1970s (given half a chance, he’d probably have had a crack at the female ones, too …).”

Recent theater roles include Bill Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous in a play for the Outside Edge Theatre Company, “One Day At A Time;” David, a critic in Steven Berkoff’s “An Actor’s Lament;” and Archie Bellows in “The Trial of Jane Fonda.”

Jay Benedict personal life

As we mentioned before, Benedict was born in California but his family soon moved him to Europe, where he spent most of his life.

As a result of his travel, he was bilingual in English and French and could speak Spanish and German as well. His talents also included running a business.

He and his wife, Phoebe Scholfield, began the company Sync or Swim, which provides post-production ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) services to the film and television industry.

He was married to actress Phoebe Scholfield and together they ran Sync or Swim, a company providing post-production ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement) services to the film and television industry. 

Benedict is survived by his wife and their two sons Leopold and Freddie, as well as a daughter from a previous relationship.
