According to reports from the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Pittsburgh Steelers, Kevin Greene, who had the third-most sacks in NFL history, passed away Monday. Kevin Greene’s death cause is not revealed, though his family members have announced that they believe the man died from a heart attack. He was 58.

The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced Greene, a defensive end and star at linebacker during a 15-year profession, passed away at his home in Florida.

Kevin Greene was a fifth-round draft pick of the Los Angeles Rams in the 1985 NFL draft and played in 228 games, was named to the Pro Bowl five times, and is a member of the NFL’s All-Decade crew of the 1990s. Greene led the league in sacks doubly, in 1994 and 1996 while he was an All-Pro.

His 160 sacks are third as the NFL began compiling the statistic in 1982.

Pittsburgh Steelers president, Art Rooney II, spoke in an announcement about Kevin Greene’s death.

“We lost an amazing player and person this morning with the passing of Kevin Greene,” Art Rooney II, Steelers president, declared in an announcement.

“His sudden death is a shock to us all as he was a close friend and teammate to so many people in the Steelers family.”

“When Kevin came to the Steelers in 1993, he had an immediate impact. Paired with Greg Lloyd, Kevin and Greg led a defense that became known as Blitzburgh and went on to play in Super Bowl XXX,” Art Rooney replied. “Kevin’s energy and enthusiasm were inspiring for our team as well as our fans.”

“I loved getting a sack,” Kevin Greene responded, according to the website of Pro Football Hall of Fame. “My teammates depended on me to do that. I contributed. I didn’t want to let my teammates down … (It) was just me making a contribution and not letting my brothers down.”

Greene played in six conference championship games and one Super Bowl with the Steelers.

According to the Pro Football Hall of Fame website, Greene said of his time with Pittsburgh that he believed in his heart that he was unblockable, and it was a phenomenal experience.

Greene attended the Panthers reached the NFC title game, 1996. The man retired after the 1999 season and was selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, 2016.

“The entire Pro Football Hall of Fame family mourns the passing of Kevin Greene,” David Baker replied in an announcement. “I regarded him as a personal friend and a true Hall of Famer in every sense. He possessed the most incredible can-do attitude of anyone I ever met. He was a great player, but more than that, he was a great man.”

David Baker expressed that their thoughts and prayers are with Kevin’s spouse, Tara, and their whole family. They will forever remain his legacy alive to labor as inspiration for forthcoming generations. He said that The Hall of Fame flag would be flown at half-staff in Kevin Greene’s memory.

The Hall of Fame flew their flag at half-staff Saturday to celebrate Greene’s memory, they declared on Twitter.

“We are celebrating the life and mourning the passing of Hall of Famer Kevin Greene.” the Pro Football Hall of Fame Twitter account shared, “The Hall of Fame flag has been flown at half-staff in Kevin’s memory. His memorial service will be held today.
