Fans wonder that is David Archuleta gay because he has addressed his sexuality for the first time during a Pride Month post. The American Idol season 7 runner-up has long been open about his Mormon upbringing.
He penned a thoughtful statement about his struggle reconciling his faith with his sexuality on Saturday, June 12.
“I like to keep to myself but also thought this was important to share because I know so many other people from religious upbringings feel the same way,” he captioned of an Instagram selfie.

Archuleta said, “I came out in 2014 as gay to my family. But then I had similar feelings for both genders so maybe a spectrum of bisexual. Then I also have learned I don’t have too much sexual desires and urges as most people, which works I guess because I have a commitment to save myself until marriage. Which people call asexual when they don’t experience sexual urges.”
He asked his 383K Instagram followers to be more compassionate to those he admits he has struggled with.
Archuleta wrote that he asks to consider making room to be more understanding and compassionate to those people who are LGBTQIA+, and those who are a part of the community and trying to find the balance with their faith which is a huge part of their identity.
David Archuleta went on to tell those in similar situations that they are not alone. “You can be part of the LGBTQIA+ community and still believe in God and His gospel plan…”
He said in his statement in comments that he has tried for almost 20 years to try and change himself until he realized God made him how he is for a purpose. “Instead of hating what I have considered wrong I need to see why God loved me for who I am and that it’s not just sexuality.”
The artist debuted on American Idol in 2008 before taking a two-year hiatus from music to go on a mission trip to Rancuagua, Chile, for a church; Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS).

He said he has wrestled with his religious beliefs and his sexuality for many years and described the “exhausting journey” it can take to adjust the two.
After many years of struggling with his identity, the singer said that he believes God created him as he is for a purpose. He also called on heterosexual Christians to have compassion.
David asked people that even if you are left with so many more questions with faith and sexuality, some people believe being open to both questions and faith is how we receive answers. God blesses those who ask, he wrote. “So let’s keep asking and seeking, and having compassion and patience.”
