Veteran HighLife Composer A. B. Crentsil Passed Away at 79


With most profound sorrow, we have to announce that on July 13, 2022, legendary highlife musician, Alfred Benjamin Crentsil, popularly known as A.B. Crentsil passed away at the age of 79. May he rest in peace.

He was born in 1943, in Prestea, Gold Coast (Ghana). He was counted as one of the “big three” contemporary Ghanaian vocalists. Crentsil won numerous Ghanaian music awards, including the Fontomfrom Evergreen Award, a special honor awarded to a musician with 15–20 years of continuous music experience.

He was a legend who created some of the biggest songs. His songs are still played on the airwaves, and on tv, not forgetting at parties, concerts, and various events. His passing has broken the heart of his fans and hit many Ghanaians both locally and internationally.

It’s would be nice to remind Ghanaians of some of the songs they would always remember about the “Ye Wo Adze A Oye” hitmaker. This famous song is on the ‘A. B Crentsil, Vol. 1’ album and mainly the purpose of the song is to talk about the financial struggles of a man who is the breadwinner of the house.

Also, He talks about forgetting his problems and his hard life and how alcohol was a treatment to forgetting the problems that came with owing his creditors. “Adam & Eve” is another hit of him which was released in 2001 and it was a massive hit in those days. The song was part of A.B. Crentsil’s album titled, “The Classics“.

A. B. Crentsil has a love song called Juliana that was released in 2000 and it was part of the “Sweet Talks” album of the legendary Ghanaian highlife musician. Juliana seemed to be the alleged lover of A.B Crenstil and he talks about her striking features and beauty of her.

Crentsil was married to his wife Elizabeth and the couple had eight children.

A. B. Crentsil Passed Away

The death news was announced by sound engineer Fred Kyei Mensah who is popularly known as Fredyma. He confirmed the heartbreaking news on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, in a Facebook post. According to Fredyma, the veteran musician has been a while that he felt unwell.

“Farewell A. B. Crenstil. The original composer and singer of the famous and controversial songs, ‘Moses and Aba AB Crenstil, has died!

Crentsil never stopped producing new songs and continued to release new albums and won the accolades that are awarded to top musicians in Ghana. He always was and will be a legend for all the people around the world especially Ghanaians.

As he always says: “When “burger highlife” came and everybody loved it, we all joined the train because we also wanted to make some money, but one that I realized is that, highlife will always be the original form of music for Ghanaians and we will always come back to it.”

On social media, messages of condolences were sent to A. B. Crentsil’s family and loved ones. His friends shared their sadness through their Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter pages.

“Musics composed by the K.K Kabobo’s, the Legendary Osibisa’s, the Amakye Dede’s, the Nana Ampadu’s, the Adofo’s, the Lumba’s, the Kojo Antwi’s (mr music man) etc. One person that isn’t been mentioned but worth mentioning is The Great A.B Crentsil.” Gibrin Rafat tweeted.
