Third-Person Being Tested For Coronavirus In NYC

Three people have been identified for testing for coronavirus in NYC after recent trips from mainland China, health officials revealed late Sunday.

Two more people in New York City have been hospitalized with viral signs. One patient has been admitted to Flushing Hospital Medical Center in Queens, and the other to New York-Presbyterian in Queens.

Samples from both patients have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for testing for coronavirus in NYC. Testing to determine whether this is a confirmed case of the novel coronavirus will take a minimum of 36-48 hours.

The first patient, under 40 years old, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan on Saturday and the other two, over 60 years old, were admitted to hospitals in Queens; one at Flushing Hospital and the other at New York-Presbyterian, health officials stated.

While none of the cases are currently confirmed, being identified for testing means they had recently traveled from China and showed signs of a fever and cough or shortness of breath without another common cause, like influenza and other cold viruses, according to the Health Department.

Testing to determine whether this is a confirmed case of coronavirus will take a minimum of 36 to 48 hours and depends on CDC testing capacity. Experts have cautioned that cases under investigation should not be considered as possible to be confirmed.

New travel limitations

New travel limitations have been published for flights entering the United States. The Department of Homeland Security declared 11 airports, including Newark and JFK, will provide enhanced screenings for passengers who traveled in China within the last two weeks.

According to DHS, the majority of foreign nationals who traveled in China within two weeks of their arrival will be refused entry. Exceptions will likely be made to the immediate family of U.S. citizens, permanent residents and flight crew, the agency told Sunday.
