Indianapolis Police Officer Seriously Shot at His Apartment
Law enforcement officials announced that an Indianapolis police officer was seriously shot and wounded with two other people Wednesday night (August 11, 2021) at an apartment complex on the city’s northeast side.
Police were called to the shooting scene at approximately 9:15 p.m. Wednesday in the 7500 block of Bayview Club Drive. That’s in the Bayview Club Apartment Homes just southwest of the I-69 and I-465 interchange.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department report, the officer was shot while checking the apartment’s perimeter and taken to an area hospital. A young female and an adult female were additionally shot at the same time.
The man who was shot died of a self-inflicted wound; based on the police’s reports, the investigation is still on, and a motive behind the shooting has not been determined.
Fortunately, the police department tweeted that the wounded officer was in “stable” condition. That’s actually not a condition but a status. The Tweet did not explain the events surrounding the shooting.
The IMPD confirmed that the shooting occurred in the 7500 blocks of Bayview Club Drive around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday. This is near the intersection of Shadeland Avenue and East 75th Street.
Is the Indianapolis Police Officer Shot to Death?
Shortly before 9 p.m., police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in the 7500 blocks of Bayview Club. When officers arrived, they tried to make contact with the residents but didn’t get any response.
While one of the officers was monitoring the perimeter, the suspect shot at officers, hitting one of them in the leg.
The officers left the scene, and the wounded officer’s partner used his tourniquet to the officer’s injuries. The wounded officer was transported to a local hospital in a stable condition.
The IMPD said officers located three additional people with apparent gunshot wounds at the scene. This includes a girl who was last listed in critical condition. A woman was also listed in critical condition.
There is reportedly no active threat to the community; however, drivers were requested to avoid the area. In a statement soon after the incident, mayor Joe Hogsett shared a tribute to the officer and his heartbroken family.
“I am grateful to hear that the officer injured in tonight’s incident is in stable condition. My thoughts are with the officer and their family, as well as all of the brave IMPD officers who routinely go into harm’s way to keep our community safe.”
He added, “We must do everything we can to stop the scourge of gun violence, deploying resources and uniting neighbors to halt this vicious cycle.”
No officers shot any rounds in this incident. Three other children could flee from the apartment. They are in the custody of IMPD.
