Arsenal is Mourning Death of Superfan Maria Petri at 83


TV presenter Piers Morgan and former Arsenal player Alex Scott confirmed Arsenal superfan Maria Petri’s death and led tributes to her. May she rest in peace.

Petri was described as “Arsenal’s greatest fan.” She is said to have “never missed a game” played by her favorite football club Arsenal FC.

Leading the tributes, the 57-year-old TV personality described Petri as a “club legend.” Posting on his Twitter, Morgan wrote: “RIP Arsenal’s greatest fan, Maria Petri.”

Maria Petri's death has sparked an outpouring of emotion from Arsenal fans everwhere.

Piers Morgan added; “Never missed a game, and we always heard her chants. Magnificent lady & all-time club legend. #ComeOnYouGunners.”

Petri had attended women’s matches for 13 years, and men’s since the 60s. She was said to have made a family of the players, and fans at the club, having never married.

In a recent interview with Mundial magazine, Petri explained her passion for Arsenal. “I’m in love with the Arsenal. That’s all I can say. Because I don’t have a family of my own, not a nuclear family anyway, Arsenal are my family,” Maria said.

She added: “The love for them just got hold of me and won’t let me go. And I keep saying to people, ‘I shall be oh so upset when I die.’ And they say, ‘why Maria?’ ‘Well, I won’t be able to watch Arsenal anymore’.”

Maria Petri’s Death Breaks Hearts

Maria Petri’s death has sparked an outpouring of emotion from Arsenal fans everywhere. The devastating news was shared on Friday, July 22, 2022.

Petri supported the Arsenal football club for 60 years. In 2019, she was presented a cake by the Arsenal manager on her 80th birthday, on the pitch during a game against West Ham.

A Telegraph interview with Maria described how Maria’s house was piled high with “memorabilia and programs from every game she had been to,” which Maria said was thousands – so many she couldn’t remember.

Twitter is being flooded with touching tributes to the lifelong fan since the heartbreaking news began circulating. One fan tweeted: “Horrible news to hear the sad passing of Maria Petri, she had such a beautiful bond with fans and players.”

Ex-Arsenal defender Alex Scott said: “Arsenal through and through. Thank you for the love, the passion, the songs, and support for us @ArsenalWFC from the very beginning. We will never forget you, Maria, We love you.”

Ex-Arsenal player Gilly Flaherty wrote: “Can’t tell you how gutted I am hearing this news today. My time at Arsenal wouldn’t of been the same without Maria. Even after leaving Arsenal, she made time for me every time I went back. Heartbreaking news. Rest in peace Maria, you will be missed so much.”

The team’s midfielder Jordan Nobbs wrote: “We love you, Maria. You are one of our own! We wear the shirt for you x.” Former Arsenal striker Kelly Smith wrote: “So sad she was @arsenal’s biggest fan both men and women. We will miss you RIP Maria. X”

Describing how Petri always welcomed other fans regardless of their background, someone else said that Maria embodied all the core values of our club.

The fan said that Maria welcomed fans and players no matter where they were from and supported the team no matter the weather. Fans believe that Maria has taught many of them loyalty and to love the club loud and proud.

The fan continued: “Every time I’ve been at Meadow Park she has been one of the first voices that I’ve heard. She is a real icon of Arsenal. A really special person that will be sadly missed.”
