Gay SpongeBob in Nickelodeon Pride Month Celebration
Nickelodeon Pride month celebration begins as the television channel announces SpongeBob SquarePants is a member of the LGBTQ Community.
Now lo and behold, the Bikini Bottom resident is, as many suspected for years, gay.
Nickelodeon officially announced in a tweet Saturday shouting out Pride month. The Channel connected photos of three of their canon characters as a clear indicator that they’re all part of the LGBTQ+ community
However, the tweet did not say it outright, the children’s television channel took to Twitter, writing, “Celebrating #Pride with the LGBTQ+ community and their allies this month and every month ????.”
The photos included SpongeBob, Schwoz Schwartz from Henry Danger, and Korra from Avatar: The Legend of Korra.
The post featured in a rainbow color background, additional signaling they are, in fact, part of the community
Surprise! Squarepants is Gay. It’s Nickelodeon Pride month celebration
Many fans claimed that SpongeBob is gay so far. However, Nickelodeon hasn’t specified his exact identity, that the character could also be bisexual, queer, etc.
Nickelodeon Pride month celebration post shocked fans as the network shared photos of a few of their characters that are apart of the LGBTQ+ community.
At the time, fans still celebrated the moment and championed the network for its identification of Spongebob for Pride.
Fans have known for a while Korra was gay/bisexual. Korra is bisexual while character, Michael Cohen, who plays Schwoz Schwartz, is transgender.
Michael D. Cohen is a transgender man in real life. This is revealed in the show itself and really written into the script. But not so much with words … just action.
For many SpongeBob’s lovers, this confirms the long-held theory that he is gay was true. As the character’s sexuality was the subject of fan theories for so long.
They promptly replied to the tweet, with many applauding Nickelodeon for the announcement.
Henry Danger shared his story
Henry Danger in an interview with Time last year revealed that he had transitioned 20 years ago. Everything going on in the world at the time prompted the decision to relate his story.
“I was misgendered at birth. I identify as male, and I am proud that I have had a transgender experience — a transgender journey… In my experience, I was born male,” Cohen described.
“What my body said about it was irrelevant. No matter how hard I tried, it was not up for negotiation. Believe me, it would have been so convenient if I was actually a woman.”
“This crazy backlash and oppression of rights are happening right in front of me,” he added. “I can’t stay silent. The level of — let’s be polite — misunderstanding around trans issues is so profound and so destructive. When you disempower one population, you disempower everybody… These are my people. I belong to this group.”
“People don’t understand. They think this has to do with sexuality and it doesn’t. They think this has to do with pushing an agenda on kids and it doesn’t,” he said.
“What it does is send a message to kids that whoever they are, however, they identify, that’s celebrated and valued and okay.”
SpongeBob fans feeling genuinely happy
SpongeBob fans are feeling treasured and genuinely happy as of this post. It continues to be seen what Nickelodeon will announce when someone inevitably asks about it.
There will be critics, however, that isn’t going to stop the Internet from having a little bit of fun along the way.
Funny enough, Nickelodeon AND the collection creator Stephen Hillenburg set out strongly inside the early 2000s and explicitly declared SBSP was NOT gay and lesbian … however, Asexuado. Change regarding heart?
Asexuality is the absence of sexual attraction to others or low or having no interest in or desire for sexual activity. It may be considered a sexual orientation or the lack thereof.
Twitter excited reactions to the Nickelodeon post
One wrote: “Announcing Spongebob being gay then turning comments off cause it ain’t no debate. Nickelodeon SNAPPED.”
Another replied: “Did they just confirm SpongeBob as gay and then turn off the replies. If so I love this for him.”
