Famous Soldier’s Father Noam Shalit Passed Away

We just learned that the father of a former soldier of the Israel Defense Forces who was captured by Palestinian militants, Noam Shalit passed away today (March 30, 2022) at the age of 75. Rest in peace man.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed by many well-known figures on social media; International Human Rights Lawyer Arsen Ostrovsky shared a statement, announcing the news.

He wrote, “So sad. Noam Shalit, father of former captured Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, has passed away, after a long battle with cancer. May his memory and love for his son always be blessed. “

Also, Executive Director @StandWithUs Israel, Michael Dickson released a message, saying, “Noam Shalit, father of Gilad who was held captive by Hamas in Gaza for five years, has passed away. May his memory be a blessing.”

During his life, he tried his best to help his son; Noam met with former United States President Jimmy Carter during Carter’s April 2008 visit to Israel. Carter planned to visit Khaled Meshal of Hamas in Damascus later. Noam Shalit stated that the fact that Carter was not considered pro-Israel could be beneficial in securing his son’s release. 

Additionally, he had blamed the U.S. for blocking talks on his son’s release. Netanyahu responded to a pilgrimage march, called by Shalit’s father for his release, by saying he was willing to release 1,000 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Shalit, but that top Hamas leaders would not be among those released.

What Did Cause Noam Shalit to Pass Away?

Although official sources just announced that Noam Shalit sadly passed away, some claim he was suffering from an illness that finally became his cause of death.

Ex TV Anchor and Reporter said, “Noam Shalit, Gilad’s father who was hostage to Hamas for more than 5 years, has just died of a long illness. For more than 5 years he had mobilized all of Israel to free his son. A model of courage. “These 5 years have been right about my health”. May he rest in peace.”

Gilad Shalit, born on August 28, 1986, is a former MIA soldier of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) who on 25 June 2006, was captured by Palestinian militants in a cross-border raid via tunnels near the Israeli border. Hamas held him captive for over five years, until his release on 18 October 2011 as part of a prisoner exchange deal.

During his captivity, Hamas turned down requests from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to be allowed to visit Shalit, claiming that any such visit could betray his location. Numerous human rights organizations criticized this stance, declaring that the conditions of Shalit’s confinement were contrary to international humanitarian law.

The Red Cross stated, “The Shalit family have the right under international humanitarian law to be in contact with their son”.
