In 1952, Peter graduated from Yale Law School with a JD and a Ph.D. in City and Regional Planning from UC Berkeley. He was 93 years old when he died.

He was the only child of philosopher and critical theorist Herbert Marcuse. Peter began his career as a lawyer in New Haven and Waterbury, Connecticut, and served on the Board of Alderman and participated in the Freedom Summer in Mississippi in 1964.

After Peter completed his Ph.D. he became a professor of urban planning at UCLA from 1972 until 1975 and at Columbia University from 1975 to 2003.

Peter Marcuse’s Obituary and Cause of Death

Lawyer Peter Marcuse‘s obituary did not reveal his cause of death. His death was confirmed by David Madden through an online post.

Marcuse shared three children with his wife Frances (née Bessler): novelist Irene Marcuse, UC Santa Barbara history professor Harold Marcuse, and Andrew Marcuse.

David Madden wrote: “RIP to our wonderful comrade Peter Marcuse (1928-2022), an immensely inspiring scholar, mentor, teacher, writer, researcher, urban planner, activist, and friend. His brilliance and humanity was evident in all of his work. I cannot overstate how much he will be missed!”

“Peter Marcuse had such a huge impact on me as I came into urban theory – shaped my views of housing as a human right and taught me so much of what I know about gentrification and urban development… What a legend! So saddened by this news,” Loren March tweeted.

“Peter Marcuse was great! His work leaves us with an important legacy… He always had something important to share with us at ACSP conferences. I will miss his intellectual presence in our planning community,” someone tweeted.

Hyun Bang Shin tweeted: “This is indeed sad news. RIP to Peter Marcuse. I was discussing his work on displacement with students in a seminar this morning and the thought of adding ‘late’ in front of his name saddens me already. Feels like an end of an era, with many inspirational colleagues departing.”
