Artist of the Russian Federation Pyotr Chaplygin Passed Away


Sculptor, devoted artist, honored artist of the Russian Federation, and People’s Artist of Russia Pyotr Chaplygin passed away in Volgograd on September 11, 2022, at the age of 83.

May he rest in peace; we send our deepest sympathies to the artist’s family, friends, fans, and all of his loved ones during the heartbreaking period.

The tragic news was announced and confirmed by the Volgograd branch of the Union of Artists of Russia.

“The unthinkable happened. Pyotr Ivanovich Chaplygin died. I don’t want to believe it. I have never met anyone else with such efficiency, love for art and life in any of its manifestations, ”Lidia Ishkova, member of the board of the regional department of the Union of Artists of the Russian Federation, shared the statement on social media.

According to Ishkova, in monumental art, in sculpture, Chaplygin tested a lot with designs and materials. He had a special style, and his unforgettable works were famous far beyond Volgograd.

Also, yesterday, official sources announced that Fisk Jubilee Singers’ music director for about three decades Dr. Paul T. Kwami passed away early Saturday (September 10, 2022) at the age of 70.

The heartbreaking news was confirmed by his family in a statement, saying, “His passing leaves a gaping hole in our souls as well as in our community and in our world. A natural born mentor, he gave of himself freely to those he cared for and invested in the lives of many with a joyful heart.”

He grew up in Ghana, Kwami had no idea who the Fisk Jubilee Singers were. Though he certainly knew their songs. In an interview with WPLN News, he recalled sitting at his father’s feet at age 4, hearing a visiting choir perform a spiritual.

Talented Volgograd citizen Pyotr Chaplygin passed away because of an illness, according to official sources.

It is known that he had has recently been ill. The master took his last year at the age of 83. In 1968 he graduated from the Moscow Higher School of Industrial Art moving to Volgograd, Chaplygin worked a lot in the field of monumental and decorative art.

On account of the artist, the design of the foyer of the House of Culture of the aluminum plant (murals dedicated to the history of Tsaritsyn-Stalingrad-Volgograd), the work on the panel “Harvesting” (the store “Russian Wines”), the implementation of reliefs, decorative sculpture and lamps in the banquet hall of the restaurant “Volgograd”.

From 1995 to 2001, Petr Chaplygin headed the board of the regional organization of the Union of Artists of Russia. He worked as the director of the Volgograd Museum and Exhibition Center.

Among his outstanding works, which have no analogs in Russian art, is the creation of images of Russian autocrats. The large-scale cycle was dedicated to the 400th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty. The busts were made of chamotte using the electroforming technique.
