Commander Richard Marcinko’s Cause of Death not Revealed

Share

Sadly, the founding commander of Navy SEAL Team 6, and U.S. Navy SEALs, Richard Marcinko passed away. His son Matt Marcinko announced his death on social media, revealing that he died on Christmas Day.

Matt Marcinko wrote on Twitter: “Last night, Christmas evening, we lost a hero, who’s also known as The Rogue Warrior, the retired Navy SEAL commander AND the creator of SEAL Team Six, my father, Richard Marcinko. His legacy will live forever. The man has died a true legend. Rest In Peace Dad. I love you forever.”

Richard Marcinko was a Vietnam veteran, author, and the first commander of the US Navy’s famed SEAL Team Six counter-terrorism unit, who died on Saturday, December 27, 2021, at the age of 81. Sadly, nothing has been reported confirming Richard Marcinko’s cause of death.

Marcinko was one of two members of the Navy chosen for a task force to develop a plan in 1979 to free 52 American hostages who were being held at the US Embassy in Iran in an episode that would later be known as the Iran Hostage Crisis.

As a result, an attempt was made to free the hostages. During the mission’s preparation, one of the helicopters collided with a cargo jet, killing eight members of the military rescue team

The Navy decided to form a full-time counter-terrorism team, SEAL Team Six, in response to the failure, and Marcinko was tasked to establish and lead the special outfit. The team was one of several that were part of a secret mission to assassinate terrorist leader Osama bin Laden in 2011, more than 30 years later.

Although there were only two SEAL teams in the Navy at the time of the unit’s establishment, the name SEAL Team Six was chosen to give the impression that there were more. Marcinko hand-selected men from existing SEAL teams and underwater demolition teams during the unit’s formation, and it went on to become the Navy’s elite counter-terrorism and hostage rescue outfit.

Richard Marcinko was tasked to establish a unit to evaluate the Navy’s vulnerability to terrorism after leaving the unit, which became known as Red Cell.

Marcinko was convicted of a kickback scheme conspiracy in 1990 and sentenced to nearly two years in federal prison. He eventually went on to become an author, penning many fictitious books based on his military experience.
