Lil Wayne Uncle Bob Cop “Robert Hoobler” Dead at 65

Share

We are heartbroken to inform you that former New Orleans police officer Robert Hoobler is dead at 65. Hoobler saved Lil Wayne’s life when he shot himself in the chest at the age of 12.

Hoobler was found dead Friday, July 22, 2022, in his Old Jefferson home. For several years, Robert suffered from lingering health issues after a car wreck and also a struggle with diabetes led doctors to amputate both of his legs, according to his grandson, Daniel Nelson.

A friend and former coworker at the Police Department, David Lapene, said Lil Wayne’s account of Hoobler and officer Kevin Balancier saving his life is one of the best stories that prove Hoobler as a person.

Robert Hoobler has passed away.

On November 11, 1994, Dwayne Carter Jr., left school early because it was report card day, and then went home to eat a fast-food hamburger. Dwayne saw the gun in the master bedroom of his family’s apartment.

The 9 mm pistol had purportedly been left there the previous day by a friend of their family who had gone over to watch football on tv, police said at the time.

Dwayne ended up grabbing the gun and shooting himself in the chest. He called 911 for help and crawled to the front door in order to wait for help as he bled out.

Hoobler was on his way to work an off-duty detail, but suddenly he heard a dispatcher on his police radio say a boy who shot himself in the chest in New Orleans‘ Hollygrove neighborhood needed help.

The officer took his cruiser to the apartment where Lil Wayne was, knocked on the door, and eventually heard a voice answer: ‘Help me. I’ve been shot.’

He kicked the door down and found Dwayne in a bloodied T-shirt and jeans. Hoobler pleaded for dispatchers to send over an ambulance but there was none available, thus he scooped Dwayne up and carried him to the back of a cruiser that a coworker of his drove to a hospital.

Years later, in a 2009 interview, Robert recalled how he spoke to Dwayne the entire trip to keep him awake. After a few minutes, Hoobler and the other officer put the child on a gurney outside a hospital that doctors and nurses wheeled away.

Robert never forgot what one of the nurses told him as Dwaynewas taken to the emergency room: “If y’all had waited for [an ambulance], … he would have died.”

After New Orleans Cop Robert Hoobler saved Wayne’s life, he grew up to become the talented rapper who has sold more than 120m records across the world. The artist also has won 5 Grammy Awards and also become the chief executive officer of Young Money Entertainment.

“I’m proud of what he’s done. But I would’ve done the same for the guy no one ever heard about again,” Hoobler said of Lil Wayne in his 2009 interview.

Robert Hoobler is dead at 65.

Over the years, the Lollipop rapper has made it clear he’d never forgotten Robert, the cop whom he and others from his neighborhood nicknamed “Uncle Bob.”

Lil Wayne recounted having recently spoken to Robert Hoobler while accepting an award in 2018. At the height of the protests ignited by George Floyd’s passing in 2020 by Minneapolis police, the rapper said Robert’s role in his life made it impossible for the rapper to dismiss all law enforcement officers as capable of brutality.

The artist said on an episode of his radio show: “My life was saved by a white cop. So … you have to understand the way I view police.”

More recent lyrics from the Sucker for Pain rapper have suggested that his self-inflicted shooting in 1994 was an attempt to die by suicide. According to reports, that year was one of the most traumatic in New Orleans’ history, with the city reporting its highest ever numbers of homicides.
