Rockland County Accident in NY Thruway Leaves 2 Dead


An SUV and a tractor-trailer collided, burned in the fire in a Rockland County accident on the southbound New York State Thruway early today.

Sgt. Mike Kopp reported that the Rockland County accident occurred in the village of Suffern between Exit 15’s merge with Route 17 and Exit 14B at Airmont Road, on Interstate 87 at approximately 1:45 a.m.

Following the fiery crash, several southbound lanes between Exit 15 and Exit 14B were closed, according to the state police.

Footage from the incident showed the trailer on its side, down the embankment just past the sign for Exit 14B, 1 mile from the exit. It seems to be twisted together with the SUV.

The accident caused heavy traffic delays as rush hour got underway Monday.

However, Kopp added although the accident caused the closure of the right and center lanes, traffic continued to move through the area in the left lane. 

Unfortunately, the crash left two people killed and the victims believed to be men and believed to be in the SUV that collided with the tractor-trailer.

Above all, as the accident scene was active this morning, Kopp announced he was uncertain of which vehicle the victims were in.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash and no more information was available yet.

Another incident today: Hilltop Lakes Plane Crash

Four people were killed Hilltop Lakes plane crash after the pilot attempted to make an emergency landing in Leon County Sunday morning, according to authorities.

The single-engine plane left Horseshoe Bay Resort near Marble Falls at about 10:00 a.m. Sunday and was going to the Natchitoches, Louisiana Regional Airport. The pilot had contacted the Federal Aviation Administration and announced that the plane was having engine problems.

Identities of the Hilltop Lakes plane crash victims were not available as of Sunday afternoon at about 3 p.m., reporter Jessica Gruenling tweeted.
