Second Shooting In One Day On Mass Causes 4 Deaths, One 6 Years Old

This is the second shooting in one day on mass causes 4 deaths and leaves many others severely injured. During a popular community festival in a Brooklyn neighborhood, gunfire erupted causing the death of one person and leaving eleven others wounded, one in critical condition. The policy is still searching for the two shooters that are suspected to be involved in the shooting that occurred on late Saturday.

James O’Neill, the New York Police Commissioner described the event as ” a tragic end to a wonderful weekend” in the borough of Brownsville. Annually, the Old Timers Event gathers thousands of people who come to take part in different musical performances which involve former residents and current local talent. This event has been taking place since 1963, it brings people together to share moments of joy while listening to music.

When the crowd heard gunshots that seem to be coming from a playground area in a nearby park, it quickly dispersed in all directions fearing for its life. The count of the shooting was seven men and five women between the ages of 21 and 55 years old. Sadly, a 38-year-old man lost his life meaninglessly. His name and identity are yet to be revealed. Six of those wounded could leave the hospital on Sunday midday.

Authorities are looking for all the information that they can find, especially through witnesses or people’s video footage. One gun was so far recovered. One witness describes the scene before the shooting occurred: ”There were a lot of people just chilling and having a good time. Then, when shots rang out, we all started running. I ran as fast as I could away from everyone. I thought I was going to get shot”. Another person qualified the reaction as ”a stampede running toward me”.

Following the chaotic situation, the community is morning, State Senator Roxanne J. Persaud tweeted: ”Respect your community. We are better than the violence.” She used the hashtags’#StopTheViolence’ and #PutDownTheGuns’. She is not the only one to have expressed her sorrow and how unacceptable this event is, that ads up to a long list of gun violence.

The second shooting that occurred on the same weekend at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Northern California where three people lost their lives including a child of 6 years old. Witnesses saw a suspect wearing tactical gear and armed with an assault rifle that opened fire on Sunday night on the crowd. In less than 24 hours, 4 innocent people lost their lives. Aside from the 6-year-old boy, twelve others were injured in the shooting. The boy’s mother and grandmother were injured but survived the shooting.

Gilroy Police Chief describes the scene as ”sort of a nightmare you hope you never have to live in reality”. The shooter was Santino William, a federal law enforcement official who was later shot and killed by the police. No information was yet given on the possible motivation this man had to commit such a crime. But how many innocent lives need to be taken away for the government to make real gun law changes?

Those who suffered gunshots had to go to the hospital, while eight others were injured in different ways due to the chaotic situation. This garlic festival has been celebrated since 1979. For three days, local farmers sold a variety of products while being entertained by live music.

These are two horrific examples of public events that turn into a nightmare. It is not normal that happy community gatherings turn into massacres like these ones. But why is this not stopping? Perhaps because of the benefits of free gun sale on a national level. Indeed, the weapon industry is one of the highest source of income at a national and global scale. In other words, making money off of people’s deaths and not regulating it enough so as to allow lawful gun users to handle guns while stopping those with ill intentions to commit such mass shootings. It is a vicious cycle that seems to have no end.

In 1971, the United States Bill of Rights passed a law that said: ”a well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed”. 196 shootings have occurred since the beginning of 2019. 196 people were killed, and 777 were injured.
