Thousands gathered in Washington D.C to celebrate Independence day where for the first time in decades the President gave a speech to the crowd. The annual celebration was marked by the traditional fireworks event featuring Army tanks and a flyover of military jets. Thousands of people celebrated in the nation’s capital which was crowned by a speech from Donald Trump to the mass.
Many have accused Trump of overspending of the 4th of July celebration. Tourists, but also area residents and families came together to observe the holiday and celebrate. Contrary to expectations, both protesters and supporters left politics aside to descend on the streets of Washington D.C.
Supporters of Trump wore their MAGA hat and yelled in unity: ”Make America Great Again” and ”Go Trump”. Needless to say that security was quite tight in the city during the even, especially during Trump’s speech. Several blocks around the Lincoln Memorial were blocked too.
The celebration was also a time for anti-Trump protesters to voice their opinion in the streets. A few dozen of them gathered with posters representing their opinions through images or slogans. A 16-foot robot in the shape of Trump sitting on a toilet seat was displayed for all to see in the middle of the city. Regardless, it did cause a few laughs.
Before his evening speech, President Trump was seen golfing and of course tweeting, his weekly activities. He attacked representative R-Mich. in his tweet by calling his a ”total loser”. Trump marshaled tanks, bombers, and other war machinery during the 4th of July celebration as a way to show the country’s military power. Critics accused him of using this a political prop in the preparation for the 2020 election.
Indeed, in a continuous climate of fear over the ”other” and now, in this case, North Korea and Iran, it seemed that it was also important for the President to vocalize this during the celebration. As the military is a sense of pride for most Americans, others would argue his cards were well played.
Nonetheless, in his speech, Trump emphasized the idea of unity and how the 4th of July was a representation of just that-different nations coming together to form one. ”The cost of our great Salute to America tomorrow will be very little compared to what it is worth”.
He continued by showing off U.S. value and military worth in a superior way against other countries and possible attacks. ”We own the planes, we have the pilots, the airport is right next door, all we need is the fuel.”
